Concrete:

Our recently established concrete division allows us to fully service our client’s needs reducing the need to subcontract. Our new equipment and experienced team have the knowledge and expertise to work on any size job. This industry is a tough one and finding the right people isn't always easy. We believe in our people and we know that those we do hire are have hired are the right fit to get the job done with quality and efficiency.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure proper level of concrete is smooth.
  • Ensure proper tools are used for the job.
  • Proper finish (broom) is applied.
  • Clean work site of any tools, debris and equipment.
  • Behave in a manner that ensures the safety of themselves, their co-workers and others on the work sites.
  • Reports unsafe work, unsafe conditions, incidents, injuries and near misses to supervisor and participates in the investigative process.
  • Attends and participates in toolbox and safety committee meetings as scheduled.
  • Comply with established company policies and procedures and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a finisher.
  • Must be physically fit and able to bend over for long periods of time
  • Basic carpentry skills and ability to read construction plans considered an asset.
  • Thorough understanding of construction procedures and safety practices.
  • Active Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) Certification.
  • Ground Disturbance.
  • Valid First Aid.
  • Must have Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean current drivers abstract.
  • Must have own transportation with strong knowledge of Calgary and surrounding area.
  • Self-motivated and able to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people.
  • Strong work ethic with demonstrated dedication and reliability.
  • Strong problem solving and decision making capabilities.
  • Must be able to work as a member of a greater team.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Must be available to work long hours including evenings and weekends during the work season April to December.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 – 75 lbs. forming material
  • Must have CSA approved safety boots.

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED, a combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Safety courses will be required upon hiring.
  • Additional education or work experience considered an asset.

  • Strip forms from concrete pieces already poured and cured.
  • Maintain forms.
  • Pound pins to keep the forms secure.

  • Reports unsafe work, unsafe conditions, incidents, injuries and near misses to supervisor and participates in the investigative process.
  • Attends and participates in toolbox and safety committee meetings as scheduled.

Equipment and Shop Manager
Job Description:

Our people are the foundation of our company and we pride ourselves in the culture we’ve created within North Star by hiring and promoting the right people.                                                                                                            Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Reporting to the President, the Equipment and Shop Manager is accountable for the overall operations of the shop, equipment utilization and facility maintenance
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a standard issue equipment list, equipment operating manuals, and a preventative maintenance program
  • Responsible for understanding operational equipment requirements for the work on hand and then effectively managing operational equipment requirements based on the work schedule, equipment availability, and long term organizational growth plans
  • Along with purchasing, where possible, help develop sole sourcing arrangements with suppliers that take advantage of volume discounts
  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer in the development of the annual capital budget
  • Conduct utilization and return on investment analysis for existing and new purchases to ensure that the Company invests in the appropriate type and quantity of equipment
  • Ensure all equipment is in compliance with safety standards and operating manual guidelines while recognizing that maintaining production and minimizing downtime are paramount
  • Responsible for the safeguarding of all company assets which includes doing hands on mechanic work
  • Required to travel to sites from time to time to address equipment related issued and provide solutions to the field staff
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of the equipment management system
  • Responsible for making recommendations and obtaining quotes for facility maintenance (office, shop and yard)
  • Motivate, support and manage employees including providing performance reviews, career development, and succession planning
  • Other duties, not listed, may be assigned by the President

 Competencies and Experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working as a Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic, on-road or off-road
  • Experience managing direct reports
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications and be computer savvy
  • Ability to understand and effectively use computer equipment including computers for diagnostics
  • Prior experience participating in CVIP (Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program) including the development and maintenance of CVIP schedules
  • An understanding of the urgency of high profile construction projects.
  • An entrepreneurial attitude, hands-on style, and get it done attitude is required to be successful and fit into the company
  • Ability to initiate and implement changes and improvements where applicable
  • Impeccable sense of integrity, character and personal values with a desire to grow with the organization

 Education:

  • Valid Alberta Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician Certificate or an Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman Heavy Duty Equipment Technician
  • Safety Certificates are considered an asset
  • Additional education or work experience considered an asset

Grading:

Our Grading and Paving Division is proudly celebrating our 8th year having worked on many different types of projects around the city of Calgary consistently providing the highest quality work on schedule. Our accomplished team can complete any grading & paving project regardless of size and scale, from small patches to sub-divisions to interchanges to large commercial sites.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Demonstrates ability to operate the Grader with Mechanical knowledge.
  • Ability to maintain depth and slope as required
  • Responsible for equipment checks and informing mechanics of mechanical problems
  • Able to grade haul roads and work with haul equipment
  • Ability to do ripping, contouring, trimming slope, and ditch cuts
  • Leveling and spreading gravel for dump trucks
  • Road Finishing
  • Behave in a manner that ensures the safety of themselves, their co-workers and others on the work sites.
  • Reports unsafe work, unsafe conditions, incidents, injuries and near misses to supervisor and participates in the investigative process.
  • Attends and participates in toolbox and safety committee meetings as scheduled.
  • Comply with established company policies and procedures and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a finish grader operator.
  • Knowledge of grade stakes and job specs.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment operations and site activities.
  • Hand-eye coordination.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment (excavators/loaders).
  • Self-motivating and able to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Thorough understanding of construction procedures and safety practices.
  • Active Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) Certification.
  • Ground Disturbance.
  • Valid First Aid.

Grading and Paving:

Our grading and paving division has worked on many different types of projects around the city of Calgary from small patches, to sub-divisions to interchanges to large commercial sites and consistently provides the highest quality work on schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Safely operate roller in continuous overlapping passes over asphalt to be compacted to desired depth and smoothness.
  • Operate the roller and other heavy equipment in a safe manner.
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance inspections and safety checks to proactively identify any potential mechanical issues and advises the Foreman.
  • Behave in a manner that ensures the safety of themselves, their co-workers and others on the work sites.
  • Attends and participates in toolbox and safety committee meetings as scheduled.
  • Reports unsafe work, unsafe conditions, incidents, injuries and near misses to supervisor and participates in the investigative process.
  • Comply with established company policies and procedures and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Assists other employees when required.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum 3 year experience operating a roller.
  • Active Standard First Aid Certification.
  • Active Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) Certification.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment (excavators/loaders).
  • Must have Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean current drivers abstract.
  • Must have own transportation with strong knowledge of Calgary and surrounding area.
  • Self-motivated and able to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic with demonstrated dedication and reliability.
  • Strong problem solving and decision making capabilities.
  • Must be able to work as a member of a greater team.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Must be available to work long hours including evenings and weekends during the work season April to December.
  • Must be able to work in extreme heat up to and could exceed 64 Celsius.
  • Must have CSA approved safety boots.
  • Able to sit for a long periods of time and look over shoulder.
  • Able to climb up and down from equipment.

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED, a combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Safety courses will be required upon hiring.
  • Additional education or work experience considered an asset.
