Underground Utilities

Winter hit us early this year and the weather has greatly impacted many of our projects, one being North Ditch. North Ditch is mainly underground works and as shown in the picture above, it is very difficult to work with snow covered soil and/or temperatures falling below 5°C. Because of this, the North Ditch project will be put on hold and resume in Spring 2018.

We are nearly finished our segment at Rock Lake. As noted in previous news updates, Rock Lake is the development of a new residential area where we are responsible for rough grading, underground, concrete and paving works and with today being the first heavy snowfall in Calgary, we are in a crunch time period to get this task done. Again, stay tuned for a final update for the completion of underground and surface works at Rock Lake.


Westgrove Phase 5 is the development of a new subdivision where North Star is responsible for both underground and surface works. Construction began in September 2017 for the installations of waterline, sanitary and storm pipes underground. We are currently working on the grading and paving around the area and this project is expected to be completed in November 2017.



North Star is the prime contractor for the development of a new residential area in Rock Lake Estates. We are responsible for underground, grading, concrete and paving services and construction has begun months ago. North Star has been working hard day in and day out to ensure the project is completed within scheduled time and before heavy snowfall hits the area. Stay tuned for the project as we will be updating everyone with the progress and maybe one day you’ll be walking towards your future home at Rock Lake community.

It’s been approximately two weeks since construction commenced at the North Ditch in East Calgary. To reiterate, North Ditch required an installation of new storm lift station to improve overland drainage and as pictured above, we have been skimming muck and clearing space for the storm lift station.

Located at 22 Marine Drive SE, North Star is a subcontractor for the development of a new Catholic School in Mahogany Calgary. The school begun construction back in May 1, 2016 and we are well on our way to finishing the surface services including parking lot for the school. Our work for the Underground has already been completed and now we are working on paving and implementing concrete around the school area. The facility is expected to be completed in 2018 and holds approximately 750 students across kindergarten to grade six.

North Star is a prime contractor for the north ditch project in the East sector of Calgary. In the ditch pictured above, when there is heavy rainfall and especially when the snow melts after the winter months, water from the ditch overflows above the surface level.

Our paving crews have just recently finished paving the parking lot for Griffith Woods School and we are working on implementing more concrete and paving around the the school area. After approximately one year of work, our part of the job as a subcontractor is nearly done! If plans go accordingly, students will soon be able to attend the elementary school shortly after the New Years in January 2018. 

Work has just begun for the installation of new storm sewer main bypass at Manulife real estate. North Star is a subcontractor on the project responsible for installing numerous storm sewers outside of building so that during a peak of runoff events, the interior of Manulife is not affected. This underground service for this small project is only expected to take one week to finish.

Sage Hill Gardens is a residential neighbourhood situated in the NorthWest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. With a population of approximately 2,985 in 2015 and 3,900 back in 2016, Sage Hill is expected to continue to grow at a rapid pace in the near future. By 2042, Sage Hill is expected to have a population change of approximately 200% increase, as depicted in the chart below and conducted by the City of Calgary census.
